Campus Library
The LMCA library is a newer addition to our campus and is boasting many activities. Serving all of the elementary as well as one of the K-5 classes, we have seen an excitement for reading develop in our students. It is also used for some of the middle school students’ computer classes. We are starting two book clubs, one for the middle school and one for the high school. In addition we have developed a section catering to the parents including fiction and non-fiction books. We have added several resources to this section to better serve our parents. Our library has a lot of traffic from staff, students and parents. Based primarily on donations we have seen our collection grow to nearly 5,000 books in a short amount of time, but are consistently looking to develop it more.
Summer Reading Introduction
As summer approaches, we are all ready for some relaxation and fun in the sun. We need to make sure that we keep our students prepared for a new school year even though we are making summer plans right now. Over the summer students lose a lot of the skills acquired during the previous school year. One of the best ways to maintain their level and even progress is to engage in summer reading. Studies have shown that this is an effective way to keep a student at grade level. There are two things to keep in mind when doing summer reading. First, the public library is an excellent resource and should be used. Second, the students should have a choice in what they read. Summer is not the time to choose books that are challenging and above grade level. We want our children to be able to relax and enjoy reading, not struggle to get through a book. Studies have also shown that students who are able to choose their own books are more likely to develop a love for reading. With this in mind, LMCA highly encourages summer reading. The more reading students do over the summer, the less time teachers need to review in the fall and the sooner they can get students working on grade level.
The recommended reading lists are available below to help in choosing books. It is in no way an exhaustive list, but it has been researched and compiled based on several factors. The books were chosen based on grade level, interest level, quality, and availability at the public library. Ultimately though, books should be chosen by you and your child. Again, it cannot be stressed enough that this is the time for “fun” reading. If you have any suggestions to add to the list, please send them to me for consideration.
Students who turn in reading logs when they return in the fall will be rewarded. We are raffling prizes and the more a student reads, the more chances he will have to win! Students will earn one ticket for every 500 pages read. All participants will receive 2 jean and 2 homework passes as well. Homeroom teachers will collect the logs during the first week of the new school year. Please record all reading that the student does, not just books chosen off of the reading list. Interestingly, even comic books have been shown to increase a child’s vocabulary! Use this time to “Get Caught in the Reading Web!”

Meet our Librarian
Kim Tassi
Kim has two prayers for her students: that they would know Christ and that they would develop a love for reading and learning.
As the school librarian, she focuses on cultivating this love of learning by helping students find stories that will both entertain and open their minds.
Kim, a former teacher, loves learning and reading, which is why the library is the perfect home for her. She is able to spend her time with different classes throughout the day, getting to know what students are interested in and finding books that appeal to them. Kim’s favorite part of her job is reading a book to each class.
She has a BS in special education from UNLV, and her two children attend the school.
Verse that inspires her most as a teacher: Matt. 5:16
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
